The attack on the Gibraltar Eagle, later claimed by the Houthis, further escalates tensions gripping the Red Sea after American-led strikes on the rebels. BEIRUT (AP) — The militant Hezbollah group fired more than 50 rockets at military posts in northern Israel on Thursday, a day after an Israeli airstrike on a home in southern Lebanon killed five of the group’s senior fighters. The waves of rockets sent over the border represented one of the most intense bombardments since Hezbollah started attacking Israeli posts in the country's north at the beginning of the Israel-Hamas war. The war was triggered by an Oct. 7 Hamas attack on southern Israel that left about 1,200 people dead, most of them civilians, and resulted in about 240 hostages getting taken to Gaza. The deaths bring the number of Hezbollah fighters who have been killed in seven weeks of fighting to at least 83. CNN —A US warship shot down a drone that is believed to have originated from Yemen in the Red Sea on Wednesday, according to two US officials. The USS Thomas Hudner, an Arleigh Burke class guided missile destroyer, engaged a drone that originated from Yemen on Wednesday and was heading towards the ship, a defense official confirmed to CNN. The Pentagon said the missiles were fired by Iranian-backed Houthi forces. Wednesday’s engagement comes a week after a US MQ-9 Reaper drone was shot down by Houthi forces off the cost of Yemen. It also comes amid continuous attacks by Iranian-backed forces in the region.

A US Navy warship shot down a drone that was heading in its direction, US officials said Wednesday. The drone downed by USS Thomas Hudner, which was operating in the Red Sea, came from Yemen. In 2016, the militant group attempted — and ultimately failed — to hit the destroyer USS Mason with several missiles while the vessel was operating in the Red Sea. The Red Sea has been a hotspot for drone and missile interceptions since the start of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war that began following the latter's October 7 terror attacks. The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the Thomas Hudner, an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer, took down the drone early morning local time. The officials did not say whether the drone was armed or how close it came to the ship before being shot down. Last month, another U.S. warship intercepted four cruise missiles and 15 drones launched by the Iran-aligned Houthi movement from Yemen towards Israel. Last week, the Houthis shot down a U.S. military MQ-9 drone while it was in international airspace. The measures include increasing U.S. military patrols, restricting access to base facilities and boosting intelligence collection, including through drone and other surveillance operations, officials say.
